Catholicism Intercession and Religious Identities
Filipino immigrants and Catholic Church in Germany
Supervisor: PD Dr. Annette Meuthrath
This study explores the everyday life experiences of Filipino immigrants, and the challenges such as social, religious and economical they face within German society. This project will investigate how it all, the spirituality of the local Catholic Church ‘local Filipino or other immigrant churches” in Germany play a role regarding social and spiritual support to the immigrants or perhaps is a hindrance to integration into local German society. The data shows that religion is not such as Pakistan the primary factor of migration of Filipinos to Germany. International migration is a much of unsolidified phenomenon.
Further, the study explores the role of religion (local Filipino Churches) supporting the spiritual and social experiences of Filipino immigrants in Germany and to capture their transnational and religious practices in Germany. Hypothetically, this dissertation contributes to the perspective that religion and religious institutions operate transnationally. Nevertheless, migrants’ relationship with religion is negotiated continuously and adapted depending on their time and context-specific situations, some migrant’s opt-in or out of religion when necessary. This provides an excellent perspective for the study of immigration and religion from a global standpoint; and to shed significant insights on the study of immigration, transnationalism and religion and illumines many areas for research in the broader milieu.
In the case of the Philippines, the unpredictability of these cross-border population movements covers 193 countries and territories, as well as ocean plying vessels. These overseas immigration movements by Filipinos are economical; whether it could be for the temporary work or permanent settlement or unauthorized or clandestine migration rather than religious immigration. The Filipino has been fortunate among many other nations of diaspora; for having well-prepared government organization (Overseas Filipino Worker) which simplifies the movement of people around the globe, providing them with numerous types of support.
